Free rendering of the letter that Franz Kafka never sent to his father
To make that video, I only worked on my memory after reading the Letter to his father. Franz does not judge his father, he makes himself guilty of the image that he keeps from him. I emphasized not on the various faces that Franz gives to his father, but more on the construction of the image he makes himself of him. This image is unique as this father is one.
I made an attempt to draw this father between real and imaginary. The balance between the feeling experience and desire, between life and dream, darkness and gentleness. I therefore took photographs of sequences of a portraitist work. Graphite proves to be ineffective to render the extreme severity of the character. Black pigments, watercolor in that case, impose themselves, superposed and superimposed.
Pages after pages, the look becomes tougher and tougher. While Franz appears, the "little thing" at the bottom left, unformed, deformed, twisted, in an unlikely heat in the shadow of the inaccessible "Vater".
More or less dark screens come thwart the attempt. The relation becomes impossible. Salutary exercise though, through the generated sublimation. Sheets intended to the take off, the soaring and the flight of the creative being. Sheets relegated to the abandonment to the earth. Unable to communicate, these sheets lose all life, all carbon matter, they become mineral, metal! No more support for anything, crumpled, just good to be thrown away. These dark thinkings have their own radiance. Through their reflective power, they make Franz free, and as a following, the crowds of readers touched by these gripping pages.
They end projected to the sky... to the point of muting into the sun. Neither rising, nor setting, but like a whirlwind, beyond any static zenith. «He fears that shame survives himself », says Joseph K in the Trial. In front of the culpability experienced by Franz facing his father, I propose a very personal rendering. These pages appear full of energy thanks to the cathartic effect they generate. Like the artist, the writer arises from adversity. Supported by the second movement, Adagio ma non troppo, of Dvorak's Violin Concerto, the spectator reads the Letter in a renewed dynamic. These metal gripped pages thrown into the air conceal unique beauty and light. The reading is punctuated by irregular light waves. Through them, and after others, Franz is reborn to life. He's born to conjugal life. Olivier de Champris Bolognano, may 23., 2008
